Grown Up Summer Reading List & Why You Should Make One!
You might love reading or you might want to be more of a reader!
Or…you may hate books and be okay with that. In that case…maybe this is a good gift list for you?
Regardless, welcome to my grown up summer reading list. I read a little bit of everything a decent variety, and I really enjoy other peoples’ book recommendations, so I figured I’d share mine with you!
Good book! It wasn’t groundbreaking but it was certainly a great reminder. I’ve gifted the book to 2 friends and will likely continue to do so!
Okay this book was really good but very niche. I love Civil War (particularly Abe Lincoln) history and Larson delivered. The first 1/4 of the book were boring but I’m telling you by about 3/4 of the way through I couldn’t put it down.
This might be cheating just a touch, but I’m going to include some of my springtime reads as well! I’ll keep the commentary to a minimum. Let me know in the comments if you’ve read any of these OR if you have any desire to read any of them!
Reading is so incredibly good for you and it makes me sad that we have so many distractions in life that we see it as sort of a wholesome hobby to have. READING IS SO MUCH MORE!
I’m a few years late to the party on this one but I strongly recommend. To be honest, I didn’t really enjoy the tone of the first 1/3 of the book but didn’t disagree with anything he said. I felt like there was a major shift after that and fell in love with it! I quickly bought his next book.
Reading slows your cognitive decline and risk for dementia. According to Roza, habitual readers experience a 32% slower rate of memory loss.
Not only that, reading can lower your stress by up to 68% per day which is wild to me.
THIS ONE IS SO GOOD. I am at the very end and it’s written in a way that is both very readable and easily digestible. I already had a general idea of the storyline from previous books, but it tells of the plot to kill Lincoln on his way to the inauguration and just some interesting tidbits like the first female detective and that one of the leading aggressors against Lincoln was a Mediterranean barber name Cypriano. Anywho.
Scroll all the way down for my #1 book from this summer! (No…not an Abe Lincoln book)
I genuinely wasn’t a fan of this one at all. I realized after I started that I had read another book by this author and equally disliked that one. Oops!
I really liked this book! It was mysterious without necessarily being scary. Chamberlain’s books are heavy but not depressing or too weighty. This one was a great beach read!!
There’s honestly a ton of other benefits that are just a quick google away, but one of my biggest motivators for reading is I want to be a lifelong learner, and I want my kids to see that I practice the same things that I tell them to do. When I have them go look at or read a book during quiet time, they know I’m doing the same thing in the evening.
Remember the red book above? This is by the same author AND IT’S SO GOOD!!!! I cannot recommend this book enough. It had a very different tone than Ruthless Elimination of Hurry but in a good way. 10/10.
This one was very mixed for me.
The cover was gorgeous and I devoured the book. It sparked a lot of Dust Bowl era wikipedia scrolling. The story itself flowed really nicely and I felt like highlighted the plight of Americans during the depression. But dang, why do Hannah’s books have to be so depressing?! Mixed reviews on this one.
So are you wanting to become more of a reader? The two ways I’ve really upped my book count over the last few years have been forming a book club with some friends and utilizing the GoodReads app to keep track of my book totals!
Read this one for bookclub! It was cute, a good vacation or beach read. Nothing too serious and even the “serious” part was handled well.
As I embark on year FIVE of homeschooling (I can’t believe it…) I wanted to read something to encourage me and keep me on the path that we’ve chosen for our family. This book did NOT disappoint. With a foreword by Joel Salatin it has to be good…
Ginny offers 10 reasons why Homeschooling is a positive decision for many families and provides evidence, insight, and resources for families who may be questioning which direction they wanted to go. I was able to tangibly put into practice a lot of the suggestions she gave, and had already been practicing some of the others!
