Valentine’s Weekend Proposal at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront | Yulissa + Gaven
Valentine’s Day weekend at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront is always special, but Yulissa and Gaven’s evening session turned into something unforgettable.
The winter sunset painted the sky in soft gold and pink tones as the waves rolled in quietly along the shore. Winter is honestly one of my favorite times to photograph at the oceanfront. Everything feels slower and calmer this time of year — the crowds are gone, the boardwalk is peaceful, and the beach has this stillness that makes moments like this feel even more intimate. If you’re lucky, you’ll even spot dolphins swimming just offshore, which happens more often than people realize during the colder months.
Yulissa and Gaven met here in Virginia Beach, even though neither of them originally call it home. Both have ties to the Navy, which brought them to the area and ultimately brought them together. They’ve only been dating for a few months, but when you spend time around them it’s obvious their relationship is grounded in something deeper. Their strong faith and connection made them confident in taking the next step — and honestly, I support them wholeheartedly.
Gaven had told Yulissa to dress nicely for the evening (which definitely makes me wonder if she suspected something!), but when the moment actually came she still seemed completely surprised and so excited.
Right before it happened, there were a few dogs running and playing on the beach nearby, adding a little bit of spontaneous joy to the scene. The wind was cold and the air had that sharp February chill, but the light was beautiful and the ocean felt peaceful in that way it only does in winter.
Gaven got down on one knee as the sun was setting over the ocean, and Yulissa said yes.
The two of them are getting married before they move out to Oregon this summer for Gaven’s job. Yulissa will be closer to some of her family there, and they’re excited to begin this new chapter — starting a family together in such an incredible landscape.
Even though their next adventure will take them across the country, Virginia Beach will always be the place where their story really began.
Moments like this are why I love being a Virginia Beach photographer — capturing real, meaningful memories in places that matter.
If you’re looking for a Virginia Beach, Norfolk, or Chesapeake photographer for proposals, couples sessions, or beach photography, the oceanfront at sunset is one of the most beautiful and meaningful locations we have.
And sometimes, even on the coldest winter evenings, it’s the perfect place to start forever. ✨
