Sunrise Mini Session at the Oceanfront | Julianne + Matt

There’s something about a sunrise session at the oceanfront that just feels different—in the best way. Quiet, slow, and incredibly peaceful. This sweet mini session with Julianne and Matt (and their two little ones, Cohen and Charlotte) was exactly that.

We met just as the sun was coming up, the sky soft and glowing, with hardly anyone around except a few early risers walking their dogs. Dolphins were out in the distance, the waves were gentle, and the whole beach felt calm in a way that’s hard to find later in the day. It’s one of my favorite times to photograph families—everything feels a little more intimate, a little more real.

I photographed Julianne and Matt back in August for their sunrise maternity session at the jetty, so it felt really special to see them again now as a family of four. Watching families grow like this never gets old.

Both Julianne and Matt are local—Chesapeake and Virginia Beach—and we ended up spending part of our time together just talking about growing up here. There’s something about shared roots that makes a session feel even more relaxed. Julianne mentioned that quiet, persistent pull to move back to Chesapeake someday—that familiar feeling of wanting to return to what’s always felt like home.

Cohen and Charlotte were so sweet together, and the whole session felt easy and unhurried—just the way a sunrise session should be.

These are the kinds of mornings I wish I could bottle up—the soft light, the quiet beach, and families simply being together.
